Mama’s Country Bread Pudding

This timeless recipe makes a warmly spiced, rich winter dessert.

Serves 8

Crack 8 eggs into a large bowl, add 1 pint of heavy cream, 1 pint of half and half, ¾ cup sugar, a pinch of salt, a pinch of cinnamon, and a smidge of nutmeg. Then add the zest of one orange and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract and whisk until fully combined. Pour mixture over 10 oz.of cubed French bread. Place bread mixture in a buttered cast iron skillet. Allow to rest at least 1 hour to soak up the goodness. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35-45 minutes or until custard is set and golden brown crust has formed. Let stand 15 minutes before serving

Mama’s Tips: Use enriched breads like Brioche, Challah or Croissants for added richness. Add Dried fruit like cherries, apricots or currants for chew and zipp! Top with fresh fruit such as bananas, blueberries or strawberries for contrast and color.
